Flammin’ Meninges

This week was supposed to be time off to relax and catch up on some rest – It’s Spring Break. I think the concept of break has been lost in translation.

Friday - March 15, 2013

Jonathon came home and suddenly spiked a fever. He had been feeling well all day, he walked outside, came in a was shivering uncontrollably. I immediately sent him to take some ibuprophen and then to bed. All night he suffered with a fever reaching upwards of 104. I was a bit worried.

Saturday - March 16, 2013

Jonathon awoke feeling much better and a  normal temperature of 98. We thought it must have been a short bug and had been burned off, so we went about our day. Speed ahead 12 hours.  Once again his temperature spiked up to 103. I was quite confused. Jonathon was experiencing ONLY the high temperature and nothing else.

Sunday - March 17, 2013

Of course Jonathon stayed home from church today, while Ethen and I attended our friend Amari Derby’s baptism.

It was an amazing service and was followed by lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings. As I was leaving I knew that Jonathon was still experiencing the high temperatures and now, they were starting to not be controlled with Motrin or Tylenol, we were going to the emergency room.

Since Jonathon has VA coverage we needed to head to Nellis Air Force Base for treatment. We got there and, thankfully, it wasn’t long before we were in the back. The doctors and nurses were all confused by Jonathon. He exhibited no symptoms other than the fever. It’s hard to adequately diagnose something if it’s not acting like itself – I thought we might have to contact Dr. House!

Our nurse, Tim, was awesome. He fought for us tooth and nail. Several doctors wanted to release us. Tim kept telling them that we shouldn’t be release there was DEFINITELY something going on and they should figure it out! Since the general consensus was to keep him, and having my brother, Jason, watching Ethen, I decided to head home. Unfortunately my phone was dead – big mistake. As I walked into my house, after a 40 minute drive home, my brother tells me that I needed to go back since they were releasing Jonathon. A decision that came about 20 minutes after I left.

Jonathon was told to go home and control the fever with Motrin and Tylenol. He was told his Primary doctor would contact him for a follow up. (That’s funny, especially if you know anything out how the VA works!)

Monday – March 18, 2013

Jonathon seemed to get worse today. New symptoms have arrived. Vomiting, Diarrhea, Shortness of Breath, Extreme headache, Pain in the neck now accompanied the high fever. This was not good! My heart ached for my husband. The medical side of my brain was screaming “THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!” I would try to control the fever with medication and one of two things would happen: 1) It wouldn’t do ANYTHING – the fever would stay high or 2) He would throw up within 10 minutes of taking it. Both ineffective!

Brother Perkins and Bishop Rickey came over this evening to administer a Priesthood blessing. Jonathon didn’t even know that they were there! I am so grateful for them and all those that are praying on Jonathon’s behalf!

Tuesday – March 19, 2013

This morning I awoke to Jonathon still with a high temperature. I needed to get Ethen off to school and we didn’t hear anything from Jonathon’s doctor yesterday. I told Jonathon that he needed to call them today when they opened at 8 o’clock. After taking Ethen to school I decided to get some rest since I hadn’t been sleeping well the past few nights – taking care of a sick hubby and all!

I woke up from my nap to my phone ringing; it was my mother calling to see how Jonathon was doing. It was also 11:45!!! I came out to Jonathon, who was trying to sleep on the couch. He looked so pitiful. After asking if he contacted his doctor he told me that he was told to go back to the emergency room!

“WHY DIDN’T YOU WAKE ME UP!” I asked, more like demanded. I was starting to get upset that he didn’t when he stopped me and said “because you needed sleep too. Don’t argue with me on this. It won’t help anyone if both of us are sick!”

With that I dropped the subject, he was r…rrr…riii…right (there I said it!)

We took his temperature one last time before heading out the door 104.6! I quickly made plans for Ethen to go to a friends house after school (thankfully she works at his school and could easily get him! Thanks Jennifer Sneed). Since I had no idea how long we would be I made arrangements for my dear friend (more like sister) Felicia (Amari’s mom) to get him after she got off work. I would pick him up from her house – whenever that would be!

We arrived to an extremely full waiting room. Jonathon was absolutely incoherent. He could barely stand! We sat there for about 20 minutes before we were taken back from triage. Then, of course, came the barrage of all of the same questions we had previously been through with no change to the answers. Thankfully they deemed him necessary to be put back into a bed rather than waiting in the lobby.

I was so happy to see Tim, our nurse from Sunday night. He was shocked to see us, his shift ended with us being prepped for admission! What made it even better, is we were under his care again, thank God! He looked me straight in the eye and said, “I told them not to let you go! Trust me, you won’t go anywhere today!”

The doctors finally decided to do a spinal tap to test for meningitis – or inflammation of the meninges in the brain caused by a viral or bacterial infection. About an hour later, confirmed, Jonathon was infected and then quarantined!

Wednesday - March 20, 2013

I went to see Jonathon today and they wouldn’t let me in the room without protective gear. Don’t I look sexy! Anything to see my sweetie!

It was tough to see him laying there, suffering from a spinal headache, a side effect from the spinal tap. If it did not get better I was going to demand the blood patch for treatment and not take no for an answer.

Thursday – March 21, 2013

The doctors have determine that Jonathon is not contagious, but since the sign is still on the door, the nurses insisted on the cape and mask when I took Ethen to see his daddy today. Ethen was thrilled to go onto a military base! Check out him in his garb!

Ethen definitely misses his daddy! I can’t wait for them to cuddle on the couch, rather than a hospital bed!

I couldn’t help but give my hunny a smooch! I thought it was funny with the mask! Ethen snapped this shot – pretty good, huh!

It seems that the blessing and prayers of the faithful have been heard. Jonathon is recovering nicely. Even the doctor was impressed by the speed in which he has made this turn for the better. I know that Heavenly Father has been with our family through this. I know that the Priesthood is literally the power of God on this earth. I thank God, everyday, for that power and how it has blessed my family.
